INDIAN WELLS, Calif. --
The UC Davis men's tennis team advances to the Big West Conference tournament's semifinal round after shutting out No. 6 UC Riverside, 4-0, in the first-round at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Thursday morning.

The Aggies bump their overall record to 9-17 for the season, while UC Riverside rounds out their 2017-2018 campaign with a final 16-19 record.

The No. 3 seeds dominated the competition in both doubles and singles play, preventing the No. 6 seeds from scoring throughout the first-round conference dual. Aggie tandem Ivan Thamma and Everett Maltby, who was awarded with the Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week Award on Wednesday afternoon, scored the Aggies' first of two doubles wins at the No. 1 position after besting Anderson Ju and Nabil Abdalla, 6-4, while David Goulak and Tommy Lam, who teamed up to play Kyle McCann and Filip Engstrom, clinched the doubles point after deafeating the Highlander duo, 6-3.

The Aggies continued to outshine the competition as they went on to seal the next three singles matches to give them the 4-0 shutout and team victory. The first of three UC Davis wins came from freshman Arjith Jayaraman, who defeated Gilbert Chung in straight-sets, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 4, while Thamma followed suit to get his own straight-set victory over Pawel Jankowiak at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-4.

Freshman Chethan Swanson followed his teammates directly after with a straight-set win at the No. 6 spot over Engstrom to seal both the Aggies' team win and their spot in the Big West Conference semifinals.

The UC Davis men's tennis team will continue their tournament run with a match against No. 2 Cal Poly on Friday at 3 p.m. In last year conference championships, it was Cal Poly's team that discontinued their participation after defeating the Aggies 4-2 in the semifinals.
