EL MACERO, Calif. - Freshman Thomas Hutchison fired an even-par 72 while senior Brandon Baumgarten contributed a 1-over-par 73 to lead UC Davis to a third-place total of 299 strokes, 11 over par and three back of 24th-ranked UCLA after the first 18 holes of the El Macero Classic men's golf tournament at El Macero Country Club Friday.
Hutchison sits on a three-way tie for third place on the individual leaderboard, while Baumgarten is among four players tied for sixth place. Senior Evan Knight, playing as an individual, gave the Aggies three players in the top 10 with his 2-over 74 for the day.
Among the UC Davis team scorers, juniors Ryan Han and Tanner Hughes each carded 77s during Friday's opening round for a tie for 34th place. Another junior, Jesse Bratz, rounded out the Aggie lineup with an 82 total.
Besides Knight, UC Davis sophomore Matt Robinson, redshirt freshman Andrew Arnheiter and senior Jeremy Sanchez each scored matching 79s as individual participants. They split a tie for 51st place among the 13 teams in the field
Co-host Nevada leads the team race with a 3-over-par 291 total, five strokes in front of UCLA and eight ahead of the Aggies. No. 27/31 TCU and No. 12/12 Texas Tech are right behind UC Davis with team totals of 301 and 303, respectively.
Two Wolf Pack members were the only players under par during what began as a windy round. Sam Meek finished at 3-under-par 69, with Grant Booth a stroke back at 2-under 70.
The El Macero Classic continues with 18-hole rounds on each of Saturday and Sunday.
