March 15, 2018

Final Stats

FRESNO, Calif. - Sophomore attacker Sorana Larson and senior midfielder Kate Fellner each scored goals down the final eight minutes of play to lift UC Davis from an 11-11 tie to a 13-11 victory over Albany at Fresno State's Soccer & Lacrosse Field Thursday afternoon.

The Aggies win their second straight game to even their record to 3-3. The Great Danes, who entered the contest with the No. 17 toughest schedule in the country, fall to 0-7.

Larson and fellow second-year Amanda Outcalt each had three goals to lead UC Davis offensively. Fellner and junior Taylor Cuenin each added two goals. Junior attacker Shannon Cross posted a goal and two assists for three total points while sophomore Maddie Myers chipped in a 1-1-2 offensive chart. Myers also had a team-best four draw controls. Junior goalie Grace Richards recorded nine saves and three ground balls.

UAlbany's Sam Tortora and Kendra Harbinger each netted four goals to lead all scorers. Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Leghart finished with 12 stops.

UC Davis led for most of the contest, although UAlbany managed to knot up the score on five occasions, including 10-10 in the 46th minute and 11-11 in the 52nd. Cuenin had both of her goals in a 4-0 run that gave the Aggies a 6-3 edge with 10:09 left in the first.

Fellner's goal to start the second half boosted the UC Davis advantage to 8-6, but Tortora hit back-to-back to equalize at 8-8 by the 37th minute. Outcalt then answered with consecutive scores of her own, first on a Myers assist in the 40th, then on an eight-meter opportunity about a minute later. Harbinger's fourth goal made it 10-10, only to have Aggie sophomore Kate Graham restore her team's lead with 11:19 to go.

Tortora's fourth goal tied up the proceedings to an 11-11 standoff. Myers won the ensuing draw, which set up a Cross-to-Larson goal with 8:12 left. Leghart stopped two more UC Davis attempts on goal to keep the margin at one, but a key turnover by Albany led to the 13th Aggie goal. Defender Addie Dearden won the ground ball, then Cuenin assisted Fellner for the game's final tally in the 55th minute.

UAlbany managed a couple of shots down the stretch but could not find the net.

Overall, the Aggies outshot the Danes by a 31-22 margin, and won the battles in ground balls (24-20) and turnovers (12-16). The two teams were equally matched on the draw at 13-13.

Thursday's neutral-site game closes out the winter quarter for UC Davis, which heads into final examinations beginning Monday. The Aggies will take on Radford (Mar. 26), James Madison (Mar. 28) and William & Mary (Mar. 31) during their break before the spring quarter begins.
