Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

UC Davis edges Radford in overtime thriller

March 26, 2018

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Sophomore attacker Amanda Outcalt scored the game-winner with 3:21 left in overtime to lift UC Davis to a 12-11 sudden victory over Radford in a non-conference collegiate women's lacrosse game held at James Madison University's Sentara Park Monday afternoon.

The Aggies improve to 4-3 for the year. The Highlanders slip to 3-5. Monday's game, originally scheduled for RU's home field, was moved to JMU due to inclement weather in Radford, Virginia.

Outcalt's game-winning goal was her third for the game. Junior midfielder Taylor Cuenin led UC Davis with four goals to go with three steals and three ground balls. Senior midfielder Kate Fellner totaled two goals and four assists for a game-high six total points. Sophomores Maddie Myers and Sorana Larson had draw control totals of seven and five, respectively, helping the Aggies dominate that key category by an 18-8 advantage.

For Radford, junior attacker Adrian Rius netted a game-best five goals, midfielder Callie Bonnel chipped in another four, and sophomore goalkeeper Jenny Davis posted 14 saves.

Although Outcalt scored two goals in the first five minutes to boost UC Davis to an early lead, Radford largely took over the first half, with Bonnel and Rius netting two first-half goals each to craft a 5-3 halftime edge. However, the Aggies exploded for six unanswered scores to start the second half, flipping the two-goal halftime deficit into a 9-5 advantage. Cuenin hit three straight during that span, with Fellner earning a goal and an assist.

The Highlanders halted the run with back-to-back goals, only to have Fellner assist Cuenin and Cross on consecutive goals, restoring the UC Davis lead to 11-7.

Facing a four-goal deficit with less than seven minutes left in regulation, Radford responded with four straight goals. Rius scored her fourth and fifth of the game, the latter of which equalized at 11-11 with 2:09 on the game clock. Myers won the ensuing draw, and Aggies Mar Alvear and Kelsey DeJesus put shots on frame, but the goalie Davis stopped each to protect the tie and force the overtime period.

Larson won the crucial first draw of the overtime period, allowing the Aggies the initiative in sudden-victory play. Larson, Outcalt and Fellner each fired shots but could not connect. UC Davis kept possession throughout, with Outcalt delivering the game-winning heroics with 3:21 on the overtime clock.

The Aggies remain in Harrisonburg to take on James Madison, currently ranked No. 4 by both Inside Lacrosse and the IWLCA. That game takes place at 5 p.m. EDT (2 p.m. Pacific) on Wednesday.
