DAVIS, Calif. - Last week, the Big West's top two teams met inside the Pavilion when UC Santa Barbara faced UC Davis for the first time this season. Three games later, it is the Aggies' turn to travel to for this season's return matchup, one that will feature the league's top two teams once again.
Both squads will enter Saturday's 2 p.m. contest at the Thunderdome under unique circumstances: UC Davis will face the Gauchos following Thursday's triple-overtime battle at Cal Poly; UCSB returns home after defeating Long Beach State on its own floor and, like the Aggies, will experience a quick turnaround from one league game to the next.
Even though the Gauchos enter the weekend with wins in their last eight games, it will face another tough test in UC Davis' defense. Last season, it was this unit that helped the Aggies leave Santa Barbara with a road victory, and it is this unit that will play a key role Saturday afternoon since it will face a UCSB offense averaging 78.1 points per game.
Even including Thursday's triple-overtime matchup at Cal Poly, and its 105-104 double-overtime victory at Long Beach State earlier this month, the Aggies are still holding opponents to 68.9 ppg.
As was the case last week, these teams are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the league's standings and numerous overall categories, a list that includes scoring margin, field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage and turnover margin.
During league play, the Aggies have done a phenomenal job creating extra possessions, and limiting opportunities for opponents, thanks to its trademark defense. UC Davis, a team that is committing only 12.0 turnovers per game against Big West teams, is forcing opponents to turn the ball over a league-high 16.3 times per game. That +4.3 turnover margin is another Big West best, and more that twice as much as the next team, which holds a +1.8 turnover margin... and that team is Saturday's opponent.
When the Aggies return home, two of their final three games will take place on Hamilton Court, and they will have Thursday off as the league's designated bye team to rest and prep for the final two weeks of the regular season.
Series Record: UC Davis trails 28-10
Last UC Davis Win: 2/4/17 - A, 67-64
Last UC Santa Barbara Win: 2/8/18 - H, 90-81
Series Streak: UC Santa Barbara +1
