Freshman Josie Ough
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- Senior outside hitter Emily Allen recorded a double-double of 15 kills and 15 digs while freshman middle blocker Josie Ough contributed .353 hitting and six blocks, but UC Davis could not protect its 2-0 match lead, ultimately falling in five sets, 25-27, 13-25, 25-16, 25-18, 15-13, to CSUN in an ESPN3-televised Big West Conference women's volleyball match at the Matadome Friday night.
The Aggies fall to 9-8 for the year, and move to 1-4 in conference play. The Matadors improve to 6-11 overall and 6-11 in Big West matches.
Allen was the only UC Davis player with double-digit offense, putting down her 15 kills in 54 attempts. Ough barely missed that threshold, hitting nine kills with just three errors. She also had two solo stuffs and four block assists. Senior libero Malia Bolko picked up 17 digs while sophomore setter Paloma Bowman added 12 digs to go with her 26 assists and three service aces.
For CSUN, senior outside hitter Aeryn Owens led all players with 22 kills on 53 attacks. Freshman left-sider Nicole Nevarez added 14 kills and a .312 average, while senior libero Kristey Markle posted a match-high 26 digs.
UC Davis continues Big West Conference action with another ESPN3 match on Saturday, this time at Long Beach State. First serve is 7 p.m.
MATCH NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS
• Allen's double-double is her 10th of the 2018 season, her 29th of her career, and her second straight... She had 29 kills and 29 digs six days earlier at UC Santa Barbara.
• Despite the loss, CSUN outperformed UC Davis in kills (19-14), hitting (.289-.190) and digs (20-17) in the first set... However, the Aggies were more effective at converting side outs (60 percent to 55)... Ough contributed on all four UC Davis team blocks while senior Brianna Karsseboom chipped in 5-for-8 attacking in the opener.
• Bolko had two key serving runs in the Aggies' dominating second set, first turning an early 4-3 deficit into a 7-4 lead; then later stretching an 18-11 margin to a 23-11 position... Allen had seven kills in the second, compared to CSUN's five as a team.
• UC Davis went from 26 kills in its two set wins to 24 kills (with 19 errors) in the final three frames... Meanwhile, the Matadors improved from their five kills in the second to 15 kills and a .314 average in the third.
• The two teams battled to eight ties and four lead exchanges in the fourth set, then 10 ties and five lead changes in the deciding stanza, including as late as 12-12 on Allen's final kill of the match... However, UC Davis' last lead was at 8-7... Owens scored two kills and a block assist down the final stretch for CSUN.
