STANFORD, Calif. -- Senior utility Ido Goldschmidt scored three goals while junior attacker Holden Tamblyn added two more, but No. 9 UC Davis could not equalize in the second half, falling by a 13-10 final to No. 2 Stanford in collegiate men's water polo action at Avery Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies slip to 14-6 for the season. The Cardinal improve to 16-1 overall.
Goldschmidt netted one goal in each of the second, third and fourth quarters. Keenan Anderson, Eric Martel, Nir Gross, Riley Venne and Jack Stafford also had one goal apiece, while goalkeepers Jonah Addington and R.J. Quigley combined for 11 stops.
For Stanford, Bennett Williams scored a game-high four goals, with Oliver Lewis registering 11 saves in front of the cage.
The Aggies held a 2-1 lead to start the contest and matched their hosts to tie scores at 3-3, 4-4 and 6-6 before trailing 8-7 at the halftime break. Tamblyn's goal at 6:03 in the third quarter and Goldschmidt's with 2:51 left in that frame kept UC Davis within a one-goal deficit, but Stanford had an answer for each. The Cardinal then scored three straight late in the contest to pull away to a 13-9 margin with less than a minute left.
UC Davis returns home for a pair of Western Water Polo Association contests against Loyola Marymount (Thursday) and UC San Diego (Saturday).
NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS
• This is Goldschmidt's second straight hat trick, his career-high 10th for the season, and his 35th for his career... With 204 total, he also moved ahead of Kevin Quinn (202, 1993-96) for second on the program's career leaderboard... Goldschmidt needs 12 to catch Chris Richardson (2011-14) for the program record... Note: the Aggies' recorded history dates back to 1993.
• The 13-10 loss marks UC Davis' closest margin against Stanford since the two-goal losses in 2007 (6-4) and 2005 (9-7)... It also marks the program's highest scoring output versus the perennial power since a 16-12 loss in October of 1996.
