ERIN, Wisc. -- Senior Tanner Hughes fired a 5-under-par 67 in the final round to move into a tie for fifth place with sophomore teammate Thomas Hutchison, leading UC Davis at the Marquette Intercollegiate men's golf tournament at Erin Hills Tuesday. Hughes and Hutchison each finished with scores of 2-under 214, while the Aggies collectively tied for fifth among the 11-team field with a 885 total.
Hughes shot an even-par 36 on the front nine, then birdied five holes from the 10th through 16th to close out his day with a 67, UC Davis' best individual round of the weekend. That score vaulted him 10 places from his starting position into the three-way tie with Hutchison and Ole Miss' Braden Thornberry. Hutchison carded a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to go with his 70 and 71 scores from the first two rounds.
Senior Ryan Han had his best round of the weekend in Tuesday's finale, turning in a 2-over 74 toward a total of 230 for the weekend. He finished in a tie for 56th place, one stroke ahead of teammates Daniel Kim and Andrew Arnheiter, the latter of whom competed as an individual. Another fifth-year senior, Jesse Bratz, finished T64th with a 235 total.
Northwestern compiled a 276 on Tuesday to move ahead of Arizona State for the team championship. Similarly, Wildcat senior Ryan Lumsden inched ahead of the Sun Devils' Alex del Rey for the individual title on the last day. Lumsden fired a 5-under 67 to finish at 5-under 208 total, while del Rey and Marquette's Hunter Eichhorn finished second and third, respectively.
UC Davis has a quick turnaround before its final fall tournament, the Alister Mackenzie Invitational, hosted by California at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.
