STANFORD, Calif. -- Despite three goals each from senior utility
Ido Goldschmidt and senior attacker
Marcus Anderson, No. 7 UC Davis was unable to keep pace with No. 9 Long Beach State, falling in a 13-12 battle during the first round of the Mountain Pacific Invitational men's water polo tournament at Avery Aquatic Center Friday afternoon.
The Aggies, seeded ninth in the tournament, move to 9-5 for the season.
Sophomore
Jack Stafford added two goals, while
Nir Gross,
Nick Coufal,
Max Somple and
Keenan Anderson chipped in one apiece. The game featured six ties, including a 10-10 standoff as late as the third quarter after Stafford converted a power-play opportunity.
LBSU followed with five-meter penalty goals to end the third and start the fourth quarter, taking the lead for good.
Marcus Anderson completed his hat trick on an after-timeout play with 1:18 left, but UC Davis was unable to equalize to force overtime in the final stretches of the contest.
49er junior Austin Stewart scored seven goals, including three in the second quarter to give the Beach a 9-7 lead at halftime.
The Aggies will face Air Force in Saturday's opener at 8 a.m.
