DAVIS, Calif. - With its final road trip of the season now behind it, women's tennis will open a season-ending three-match homestand starting Thursday when UC Riverside visits the Marya Welch Tennis Center for a 4 p.m. dual.
This match vs. the Highlanders was originally set for Friday, but bumped up a day due to rainstorms that are forecasted to pass through Davis.
On Saturday, this week's schedule for UC Davis will end when Long Beach State, the defending Big West Conference regular-season champions. First serve for this dual, the final league contest of the season for the Aggies, is set for 10:30 a.m.
One week after in its Big West Conference finale, women's tennis will host the San José State Spartans (April 15) in its final regular season match of the season. That dual will serve as the Aggies' final tune-up before they head to Indian Wells, Calif., to compete in this year's Big West Conference Women's Tennis Tournament.
Before all league teams begin prepping for this year's conference tournament, everyone will begin jockeying for the best possible seeding at this year's event. That stretch run will start for UC Davis on Thursday against the Highlanders.
The Aggies will catch a bit of a break thanks to Mother Nature; once the Highlanders finish their non-conference road dual at Loyola Marymount on Wednesday, they will have less than 24 hours to fly to Northern California and return to action.
With the way UCR has been playing lately, the team may not mind its schedule for the week since it has won four of five duals throughout is recently completed season-long five-match homestand.
Unlike the Aggies, whose season will end on April 15 at home vs. SJSU, UC Riverside has a packed schedule both this week and next. After facing UC Davis, the Highlanders will host UCSB, Cal Poly and UC Irvine, all at home, before heading to Indian Wells.
Opening its season-ending three-match road trip with a 7-0 loss at Pepperdine, Long Beach State will face Sacramento State on Friday before crossing the Causeway to face UC Davis in its final road event of the season on Saturday. The 49ers matchup against the Aggies is the first of three straight league matches, as they will end the season by hosting Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara next week.
Since one loss separates Hawai'i -- and its undefeated league record -- Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton, the 49ers cannot afford to suffer a loss if they want to defend their regular season title. A loss at UC Davis, or against either Central California foe will effectively knock LBSU out of title contention.
As strong as Long Beach has been at home this season by winning nine of 10 on its own courts, it has struggled on the road this year and split its six matches played. In addition to its recent result at Pepperdine, it also dropped matches at Hawai'i and Loyola Marymount.
