Volleyball signs two during spring NLIs

April 15, 2017

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis women's volleyball signed two prospective student-athletes during the spring signing period, head coach Dan Conners announced. Alphabetically, the two future Aggies are Ruki Kennedy, from West Covina, California; and Chelsea Maeglin, from New York, New York.

Both are high school seniors who are expected to enroll in the university for the fall 2017 quarter.

"We are very excited to announce the additions of Chelsea and Ruki to our 2017 roster," said Conners. "Chelsea will provide a depth in the outside hitter position and comes in with a big arm. Ruki will give us more size and athleticism in the middle. Both players have the potential to compete at a very high level."

Kennedy, whose full name is Ruqayyah Abdul-Khabir Kennedy, letters in both volleyball and basketball for West Covina High School. The 6-foot-4 middle blocker earned All-Hacienda League first-team honors and was voted Most Improved Player as a junior. On the club scene, Kennedy helped Mizuno Long Beach to a first-place showing in the Southern California Jr. National Qualifier 18s division despite being a 17-under team.

Maeglin, also a two-sport letterwinner in both volleyball and basketball, helped Hunter College High School to three straight Public School Athletic League championships and three state playoff berths from her freshman through junior years. As a 5-foot-11 outside hitter, she captured team MVP during the last two seasons and added tourney MVP distinction at every tournament played. She also claimed 17-under MVP honors as a member of All-Star Empire VBC.

Maeglin will also become the first UC Davis student-athlete to hail from the Empire State since lacrosse players Hannah Mirza (West Chester) and Stephanie Guercio (Ronkonkoma), each of whom graduated in 2013.

Kennedy and Maeglin increase the team's 2016-17 signing class to six. Conners secured Paloma Bowman of Vacaville, California; Alexa Rockas of Gilbert, Arizona; Leonie Strehl of Encino, California; and Mahalia White of Canoga Park, California, during the November signing period.

UC Davis went 14-15 in 2016, Conners' third season at the helm.
