DAVIS, Calif. - Friday's non-conference dual at the Marya Welch Tennis Center will provide a unique situation for women's tennis when San José State visits campus for a 2 p.m. contest. The Aggies, a team that will compete in the second of a season-ending three-match dual, will face a Spartan squad that has only competed in 14 spring events this season - a total that matches the number of wins UC Davis has collected this season.
The Aggies' penultimate match of the regular season also gives head coach Bill Maze another opportunity to adjust his lineup, if he chooses, to find the best possible matchups for the upcoming Big West Women's Tennis Tournament.
San José State will provide a stern test, something that will help women's tennis prep for the year-end league playoffs; the Spartans' lineup features a nationally ranked singles and doubles team.
Junior Sybille Gauvain earned a No. 84 ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association when the organization unveiled its latest rankings on Tuesday. Gauvain holds a team-high 17 singles victories, and is 8-5 in spring duals, with every result recorded at the No. 1 position.
She is also part of a ranked doubles team that includes Marie Klocker; together, that pair is No. 89 in the nation. Responsible for all seven doubles wins at the No. 1 position this spring, they are 7-2 in dual play, with wins collected in their last seven straight matches, and 11-5 overall including fall tournament action.
The Spartans, a team in the middle of its final road trip, a three-match string of duals that began last Sunday at Fresno State, and will end on Easter at Nevada, are coming off a 4-3 loss to the Bulldogs. That result snapped a five-match win streak, which included victories against Portland, Santa Clara, Illinois State, Academy of Art and UNLV.
Led by Nikita Pradeep and her 15 dual singles victories, four Aggies have collected double-digit victory totals so far this season. Isabella von Ebbe will enter Friday's contest with a 13-3 dual record; Kristina Breisacher is 12-9 this season with Jessie Lee picking up her 10th win, and her fourth in a row, in last week's indoor dual vs. Long Beach State.
With one more positive result, Kristy Jorgensen will add her name to this list since she has nine singles triumphs to her credit in 2017.
In doubles action, all three pairings either have double-digit win totals, or are on the cusp of accomplishing this feat. Jorgensen and Kelsie Bryant lead all Aggie doubles teams with 10 victories, all earned at the top spot; von Ebbe-Kristina Breisacher and Pradeep-Samantha Martino have nine wins, all earned at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.
