CHICO, Calif. - UC Davis sophomores Tommy Grossman and Erinn Beattie each sit in third place in the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively, after the first day of action at the Chico State Multi-Event Classic Thursday. Grossman has 3,607 points after five events in the dec, while Beattie has a four-event total of 2,970.
This is Grossman's first collegiate appearance in the decathlon. Beattie finished sixth at last year's Big West Conference Championships with a 4,629 total. Grossman placed third in four of the five Day 1 events, including a 6.92-meter (22 feet, 8.5 inches) mark in the long jump, an event in which he placed seventh at last year's Big West meet. That was good for 795 points toward his overall total. Beattie, who shares the school record in the high jump, missed her PR by a single centimeter with a 916-point leap of 1.75m, or 5-feet-8.75. She also opened the day with a career-best 14.88 in the 100 hurdles despite a slight headwind of 0.4 meters per second. That is nearly a half-second better than her previous wind-legal best of 15.35. Chico State's Jason Dunn leads the dec with a 3,114-point total, while fellow Wildcat Brooke Whitburn (3,114) holds a narrow lead over Humboldt State's Marissa McCay (3,111) in the hep. The Chico Multis, now in its 32nd year, marks the start of the UC Davis outdoor track & field season.
