Goins earns Big West weekly accolade

March 14, 2017

UC Davis senior Rianna Goins captured Big West Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week honors for the period ending March 12, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday. This is the first weekly award won by an Aggie in 2017, and the first of its kind since Erika Barr won similar honors in April of 2016.

An Anaheim, California, product and alumna of Canyon High School, Goins posted a personal-best 54.84 in the women's 400-meter run at last weekend's Aggie Open home meet. That crushed her previous PR by more than three seconds, made her just the fifth woman in program history to break the 55-second mark in the quarter, and puts her atop the Big West Conference leaderboard by almost a second and a half. Goins' performance came one week after her participation in the USATF Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, which made her the first Aggie in the university's Division I era to do so. The Big West Conference honors one track athlete and one field athlete in each of the men's and women's sports. UC Irvine sprinter Isaiah Jewett won Men's Track Athlete of the Year, Cal State Fullerton's Trevor Gorwin won Male Field Athlete of the Year, and Long Beach State's De'Ondra Young and UCI's Barbara Coward shared the Female Field Athlete of the Year award. UC Davis returns to action at the two-day Hornet Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Friday portion consists mostly of multi events plus the hammer throw and 10,000-meter runs. The remainder of the meet resumes on Saturday, starting with the women's javelin at 9:30 a.m. Live results will be available via Red Cap Timing at redcaptiming.com/2017/hornet/.
