Box Score Feb. 24, 2017 Final Stats
DENVER - Junior Kate Fellner and sophomore Taylor Cuenin each scored two goals, but 15th-ranked Denver ultimately pulled away from a close first-half battle, as UC Davis lost to its former Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse leaguemate by a 16-6 final Friday.
The Aggies move to 1-2 for the year. The Pioneers remain unbeaten at 5-0. Largely a reserve in her first two years, Fellner notched her first multi-goal game at UC Davis. Cuenin also posted team highs of five caused turnovers and three draw controls. Sophomore
Shannon Cross turned in a goal and two assists, while senior
Melissa Kellan accounted for the remaining Aggie tally. Senior goalie
Lauren Ali posted 13 saves with a career-high five ground balls in the UC Davis crease. For Denver, sophomore Elizabeth Behrins led all players with four goals. Fellow second-years Julie Feiss and Kendra Lanuza each scored three goals and combined for seven assists. Senior Ellie Knott had nine draw controls, helping the Pioneers finish with a 16-8 margin in that category. Overall, DU scored 11 unanswered from the final minutes of the first half to the 49th minute of the game. Although Cross drew first blood for the Aggies with her second-chance goal in the seventh minute, UC Davis largely pursued its host during the first half. Lanuza scored and assisted goals to give DU a 3-1 lead, only to have that edge wiped away within a span of 11 seconds. Fellner converted an assist from freshman
Kate Graham late in the 20th. Then Cuenin won the ensuing draw and went straight to the cage for the 3-3 equalizer. The Pioneers again restored their lead to 5-3 with 7:08 left in the first half, only to have UC Davis again score back-to-back. Cross assisted Kellan in the 26th, then set up Fellner in the 28th to knot the contest at 5-5. Denver finished the first half with three straight goals, including two on eight-meter chances, to take an 8-5 edge at the break. Behrins continued the Pioneers' scoring run with back-to-back goals from Feiss in the 38th minute, extending the margin to 10-5. Feiss later completed her hat trick to make it seven straight goals and a 12-5 lead for DU by the 42nd minute. The Aggies did not manage a shot for the first 12 minutes after the break and finally broke their scoreless drought on Cuenin's second-chance goal with 4:16 left in the game. Overall, Denver outshot its guest by a 38-11 edge, including 19-3 in the second half. UC Davis also struggled to transition the ball, completing 11 of 20 opportunities for the game and just 5 of 13 in the first period. UC Davis returns to action at No. 13 Colorado on Sunday. Game time is 11 a.m. Pacific.
