DAVIS, Calif. - Senior attacker Melissa Kellan and sophomore midfielder Taylor Cuenin each netted four goals with two assists to lead UC Davis to a 19-7 win over LIU Brooklyn in a non-conference women's lacrosse game at Aggie Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies pick up their first win, evening their season record to 1-1. The Blackbirds slip to 0-2. The two offensive captains led eight UC Davis scorers. Freshman attacker
Amanda Outcalt recorded her first collegiate hat trick, while junior midfielder
Kelsey DeJesus posted two goals with two assists.
Shannon Cross and
Sorana Larson each added two goals, while freshmen
Kate Graham and
Maddie Myers chipped in one goal apiece. In the field,
Shannon Geary posted a career-high 10 draw controls, helping the Aggies dominate that part of the game by an 18-9 margin. Cuenin led all players with six ground balls and four caused turnovers, while hauling in four draws of her own. For LIU, senior Tori Shinkowitz had three goals while sophomore goalkeeper Virginia Gibbons tallied 13 saves. UC Davis outshot its guests, 24-9, during the first half but managed only two goals during the first 14 minutes of play. Kellan's first goal of the game, off an assist from Myers in the 15th minute, ignited a run of four unanswered that put the Aggies up by a 6-2 margin. Shinkowitz converted an eight-meter chance for the Blackbirds to cut the lead to 6-3, but Myers responded with an unassisted drive two minutes later. UC Davis took a 7-3 lead into the break. Myers' goal proved to be the first of nine straight, extending the advantage to 15-3 by the 44th minute. Outcalt, Kellan and Cuenin each scored twice in that stretch. DeJesus and Kellan also had two assists during that time. Overall, UC Davis finished with a 41-15 advantage in shooting and committed just 10 turnovers. The Aggie midfielders also frustrated the Blackbird transition, which cleared to the attacking end just 12 times in 19 chances. UC Davis is idle until making a Centennial State trip from February 24-26, taking on former Mountain Pacific Sports Federation leaguemate Denver on that Friday, then taking on Colorado for a conference game on that Sunday.
