Jake Maier named Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week

Oct. 30, 2017

Eight UC Davis athletic teams posted the highest NCAA Graduation Success Rates in their respective conferences — a group that includes the football program — while four programs were honored with Public Recognition Awards by the NCAA, in its most recent report, after their Academic Progress Rate stood among the top 10 percent of their respective sports.

OGDEN, Utah -
In front of the fourth-highest crowd in Aggie Stadium history (10,503), Jake Maier threw for a career-high 459 yards and four touchdowns to help UC Davis win the Battle for the Golden Horseshoe. The Aggies defeated the Mustangs during Homecoming Weekend to earn their first home victory over Cal Poly since the 2011 season; in that game, Maier posted the most passing yards by a UC Davis signal caller in the program's Big Sky era.

Maier, a sophomore economics major, will enter his team's upcoming game at Idaho State ranked No. 2 in the nation with a .706 completion percentage, No. 4 in total passing yards (2,675) and passing yards per game (334.4), No. 5 in completions per game (26.38), and No. 7 in total offense (333.3 ypg).

The La Habra native's efforts helped UC Davis collect its fourth overall win of the season, matching the number of victories against Division I teams earned by it in the previous two seasons combined.

By completing 33 of 43 passes, Maier nearly matched his Big Sky program record of 35 completions, but did become the second Aggie in the program's Big Sky era to throw four touchdowns in a game, on multiple occasions, in a single season.

Throughout last Saturday's rivalry game, he targeted six different receivers to notch his sixth game with 300 or more passing yards this year.

Maier is the third Aggie this season to earn weekly accolades from Big Sky officials, following Keelan Doss and Ryan Parenteau who collected Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week awards on Sept. 4 and Sept. 18 respectively.
