UC Davis basketball supports Suits and Sneakers Week

Jan. 25, 2017

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis basketball fans in attendance at Saturday's 5 p.m. game vs. UC Irvine - a matchup featuring the top two teams in the Big West Conference - will notice something unusual on the Aggies' sideline: Each member of the coaching staff will swap their usual dress shoes for sneakers to support the American Cancer Society's Suits and Sneakers Week and Princess Lacey's Laces.

Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Week is a nationwide event when basketball coaches across the county unite for a common cause saving lives from cancer. Coaches and their staff wear sneakers with their suits while coaching games to raise awareness, share the importance of nutrition and physical activity, and to promote the American Cancer Society as a place for people facing cancer to turn to for free information, help, and support 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Created in honor of Lacey Holsworth, an eight-year-old cancer patient who was Michigan State basketball's number one fan, her special relationship with star player Adreian Payne captured the media's attention throughout the 2013-14 campaign. Although she passed away shortly after that season concluded, she continues to give hope and inspiration to millions of others affected by cancer.

In memory of Lacey, and as a method of supporting Princess Lacey's Laces, fans can purchase a specially designed pair of shoelaces from Shoe Carnival, which is available online or in stores. Purchasing these laces will help the American Cancer Society, and this program, continue to save lives and support those affected by pediatric cancer.
