DAVIS, Calif. - The finale of a season-long three-match road swing, and the team's inaugural home event of the 2017 season will take place this weekend for UC Davis women's tennis. Less than 24 hours after facing rival Sacramento State in this year's Causeway Cup event, the Aggies will return home to open their three-match homestand against San Francisco.
First serve for Saturday's dual, taking place on the Hornets' main campus, is set for 1 p.m. UC Davis tennis fans who are interested attending this rivalry contest are encouraged to park in Structure 1 - located on Sinclair Road between the school's baseball field and on-campus tennis facility.
Sacramento State's campus map is available by clicking here.
Starting with Sunday's 12 p.m. home opener versus the Dons, the Aggies will host their next three matches at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. On Feb. 5, the team will host a rare tennis doubleheader when Stanislaus State and Sonoma State visit campus.
Coming off a split of its matches played in Tempe, Ariz., last weekend, UC Davis will face a Hornet squad that also split its season-opening matches. After sweeping San Francisco 7-0, Fresno State secured a 6-1 result two days later at Sacramento State.
Against the Bulldogs, junior Ana Loaiza Esquivas was the lone Hornet to secure a point for her team when she defeated Fresno State's top-ranked singles player in a third-set tiebreaker. With that result, Esquivas is the only player on roster to hold an undefeated singles record.
By winning last season's Causeway contest, Sacramento State has now split the last four head-to-head matches against UC Davis. With a victory, the Aggies will earn another five points in this season's rivalry standings, pulling the school five points away from meeting the 40-point threshold needed to secure at least a share of this year's title.
The Aggies have won the Cup the last four seasons and lead the all-time series by an 8-4 margin.
San Francisco will seek its first victory of the season on Sunday when it faces the Aggies - the first of consecutive events against a Big West squad. The Dons will host Cal State Fullerton in their 2017 home opener next Friday.
After competing in four fall tournaments, San Francisco ended its hiatus by hosting the Academy of Art in a home exhibition on Jan 17. After winning the doubles point that afternoon, the Dons dropped singles matches at positions No. 1, 4, 5 and 6 to fall by a 5-2 score.
In its first official spring event, Sacramento State swept USF on its home courts.
