No. 10 UC Davis splits Day 1 at Bruno Invite

Sept. 3, 2016

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Morgan Olson-Fabbro totaled five goals while Marcus Anderson and Riley Venne posted multi-goal games in each end of No. 10 UC Davis' Saturday split with Harvard and Brown at the Bruno Classic men's water polo tournament. The Aggies lost to 14th-ranked Harvard, 13-12, before edging No. 13 host Brown by a 9-8 final.

UC Davis opens the season at 1-1. Olson-Fabbro netted two goals in Saturday's early contest then completed his first Aggie hat trick in the nightcap win over the Bears. Anderson and Venne both scored two goals in each contest, with Anderson coming up with the go-ahead tally in the final minutes against Brown. UC Davis broke away from a 4-4 halftime tie to outlast Brown. Venne, Olson-Fabbro and sophomore Sasa Antunovic each scored in the first quarter to craft a 3-1 lead, but the Bears rallied back to even the contest at 3-3 early in the second. Junior Cory Laidig put the Aggies back on top with his power-play goal with 3:26 remaining in the half, only to have Brown's Jake Wyatt equalize two minutes later on an exclusion opportunity of his own. Olson-Fabbro scored his second goal at 3:13 in the third to give the Aggies a 7-5 lead but Brown again fought back, tying the contest on a Yahel Murvitz-Lahav goal with 5:30 to go in the fourth. Bear sophomore Rico Burke made it three unanswered when he put his team up by an 8-7 edge at the exact midpoint of the final frame. However, Olson-Fabbro completed his hat trick on the next trip down to knot the contest at 8-8. Anderson scored the game-winner just after the two-minute mark. Junior goalkeeper Spencer Creed recorded eight total goals in the win, including five in the second that kept the Aggies at least even with their surging opponents. UC Davis battled all the way back from an 8-3 deficit against Harvard earlier in the day but ultimately came up short. Senior Noah Harrison scored all three of his goals in the second quarter to help the Crimson amass that five-goal lead. Olson-Fabbro and Venne each scored to help bring UC Davis back to within three, but the Aggies still trailed by a 9-4 edge at the halftime break. The Aggies notched four unanswered in the third quarter to tie the game at 9-9, with Antunovic finding the net in the final seconds of the frame. An Olson-Fabbro goal to start the fourth provided UC Davis with its first lead since the opening minutes, but goals from senior Joey Colton and junior Harry Tafur restored the lead to Harvard. Anderson and sophomore Colter Knight each hit goals to tie the game for a fifth and sixth time, but UC Davis could not regain the lead. Harrison nailed the winner for the Crimson with 1:20 remaining in regulation. Saturday's game marked the second straight loss to Harvard. The Aggies lost to the Crimson in overtime at least year's Rodeo tournament in Santa Clara. UC Davis concludes action at the Bruno with morning games against George Washington and No. 20 St. Francis of Brooklyn on Sunday.
