Sept. 24, 2016 WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Sophomore Ido Goldschmidt scored seven total goals in two games, including a game-high four in UC Davis' 13-9 win over Princeton in the battle of the nation's 11th-ranked teams, closing out the second day of action at the Mountain Pacific Invitational men's water polo tournament at Northgate High and California.
The Aggies beat 19th-ranked Western Water Polo Association leaguemate Santa Clara by 20-8 final earlier in the day to move into the consolation semifinal. Sophomore
Brock Gordon led the way with four goals in that victory. Goldschmidt led eight UC Davis scorers in the win over Princeton. Junior
Morgan Olson-Fabbro, sophomore
Sasa Antunovic and senior team captain
Tennyson May added two each. Goldschmidt scored two in the first quarter to boost the Aggies to an early 4-1 lead. UC Davis held on by a 7-5 margin at halftime but Princeton battled back to a 7-7 tie midway through the third on a Michael Swart goal. However, the Aggies scored five straight during the next eight minutes to take a 12-7 lead by the 4:13 mark in the fourth. Goldschmidt had two goals in that stretch. In Saturday's opener, Gordon's four goals led 10 UC Davis scorers. Goldschmidt and freshman
Yurii Hanley each added three.
Cory Laidig,
Riley Venne and Antunovic netted two apiece. The two teams battled to a 2-2 start in the first six minutes of play, but six different players scored in UC Davis' six-goal second. The Aggies held a 9-4 lead at halftime, then continued to roll for seven more goals in the third to pull away with the victory. Gordon hit three goals in the final nine minutes of play to assume the scoring lead in the game. UC Davis will play for ninth-place in the 16-team tournament, taking on Pomona-Pitzer in Sunday's final contest.
