ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Sophomore Samantha Hutchison shot an even round of 72 at Radrick Farms Golf Club on Sunday, tying for 17th place, and leading the UC Davis women's golf team during stroke play at the East & West Match Play Challenge, hosted by the University of Michigan.
Freshman Yoonhee Kim, who posted a 1-over 73 in the first of Sunday's two rounds that determined Monday's match play pairings, tied for 26th. Paige Lee and freshman Rei Nakatani were 33rd and 34th, respectively, while freshman Christine Danielsson tied for 43rd. Freshman Courtney Clark, playing as an individual, was 48th.
The Aggies were 29 over as a team, finishing in eighth place. They advanced to the consolation bracket of match play where they'll face fifth-place Michigan. Penn State and Nebraska will square off in the other consolation semifinal.
The tournament is set up to give teams experience with a similar format which will be in its third year of use at the NCAA Championships in the spring. UC Davis is participating in the East-West event for the third consecutive year.
"Radrick Farms is an unbelievable golf course," said head coach Anna Temple. "It rewards great course management, good putting and the ability to get it up and down. With a young team, I'm very pleased with what we learned out there today. We had a solid plan and tomorrow we need to do a better job of executing it. Michigan is a good team and it will be fun to see how we are able to compete against them."
Hutchison had an outstanding round after shooting 77 in the morning. She used a quick birdie on her opening hole of the second round - the par-3 11th - and was 1 over after eight holes. But she played 1-under golf the rest of the way with a birdie and nine pars to shoot 72 and finish 5 over overall.
Kim, who led the Aggies at last week's opener at New Mexico, had a solid opening round that featured four birdies - two on each side of the 6,292-yard course - that helped her shoot 73. Her 77 in the afternoon put her 6 over for the day.
Lee, a senior from Folsom majoring in psychology, bounced back from an a first-round 78 to pick up a pair of birdies and shoot 75 in the second. She finished 9 over. Nakatani was two strokes behind Lee after rounds of 77-78. She was a combined just 1 over on the front nine on Sunday.
Danielsson cut four strokes from her first-round score with a 77 in the second, carding a pair of birdies and covering the back nine just a pair of shots above par. Clark carded scores of 81-82, highlighting her day with a second-round birdie on the long 508-yard, par-5 first hole.
Clark will join the tournament's seven other individuals to play a separate match play event that also starts on Monday.
First-place Ohio State (-1) will face Oregon (+7) in one championship bracket semifinal while Kentucky (+2) and Wisconsin (+6) play in the other.
The tournament concludes on Tuesday.
