Sept. 17, 2016 DAVIS, Calif. - No. 12 UC Davis extended its winning streak to six games thanks to an 18-5 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and a 17-9 victory against Redlands in Saturday's portion of the Aggie Roundup men's water polo tournament at Schaal Aqautics Center. The Aggies added a 21-2 exhibition win against American River College to close out the session.
UC Davis moves to 6-1 for the season. Oddly, the Aggies had slow starts in each of their two wins over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference members C-M-S and Redlands. The Stags held a brief 2-1 lead before the Aggies scored nine unanswered en route to a 10-3 halftime lead. Seven UC Davis players scored two goals in the contest:
Riley Venne,
Marcus Anderson,
Cory Laidig,
Eric Martel,
Yurii Hanley and
Sasa Antunovic. Sophomore
Brock Gordon led the Aggies with three assists against C-M-S. Against Redlands, Carter Kerwin drew first blood for the Bulldogs with his goal in the opening minute. Again, UC Davis regrouped to explode for six straight goals to hold a 6-1 lead at the end of the first frame, then made it seven straight when Galli assisted Venne in the first minute. UC Davis led 9-3 at halftime and by as much as 13-4 midway through the third quarter. Antunovic tallied his first hat trick of the year against Redlands, while Gordon, Venne, Martel and sophomore
Nick Coufal each added another two goals apiece. Goalies
Spencer Creed and
R.J. Quigley split time in front of the UC Davis cage, recording seven saves apiece in the two official games. Creed started both contests, with Quigley relieving in the second half. As a two-year college, ARC does not count as a countable opponent for the Aggies, and the scores and stats do not count toward the season totals. Nonetheless, Laidig scored four goals and junior
Morgan Olson-Fabbro added another three in the 21-2 win. UC Davis scored 15 unanswered before Jacob Walker put the Beavers on the board with his power-play goal at 6:44 in the third. The Aggies wrap up action at the three-day, 17-game Roundup on Sunday by taking on No. 3 California at 10:40 then hosting a rematch with No. 17 San Jose State for the 4 p.m. finale.
