Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Lauren Copeland emerged victorious from a pack of players that fought for a loose ball outside UC Davis' scoring circle, found Agustina Singh racing down the turf and punched a pinpoint pass that split two Drexel defenders to set up a one-on-one scoring opportunity for the Aggies in the early moments of Friday's non-conference match at Aggie Field Hockey Facility.

Once Singh received the ball, she raced towards the Dragons' cage, and waited for goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist to make the first move. Once she hit the turf and stacked her pads, all the senior forward needed to do was lift her shot over Gilchrist, which she successfully accomplished in the ninth minute of play to give UC Davis a 1-0 lead.

Drexel tied the match early in the second half; 12 minutes later, it scored the go-ahead goal and led 2-1.

From that point throughout the remaining 18 minutes of the match, UC Davis tested Gilchrist whenever an open shooting lane presented itself in search of the game-tying goal. But it was a Drexel goal scored off a penalty corner, in the 60th minute, which pushed its lead to 3-1.

Less than a minute later Farah Farjood nearly drew the Aggies within one when Gilchrist somehow deflected her shot at the last moment towards the far sideline. Another two shots from Kate Young took place throughout the final minutes, but it was Drexel that hung on to defeat UC Davis by a 3-1 score.

The Aggies will not return to action until next Saturday when it faces Missouri State, on its own turf, in the first of back-to-back matches that will take place in Springfield, Missouri. After facing the host Bears, UC Davis will take on LIU-Brooklyn the following day.

Field hockey will enter that weekend with a 1-6 record; two days after recording a win at Cal, Drexel improves to 4-3 and will end its Northern California road trip Sunday afternoon at Pacific.

Singh and Young led all Aggies with three shots; the former recorded two of her team's five shots on goal.

Making an impressive play on defense for UC Davis, and preserving its 1-0 lead in the process, was Lauren Mewes, who recorded the second defensive save of her career three minutes into the second half. On Drexel's first post-halftime penalty corner, it was she who stood inside the far post, and redirected Jessica McCarthy's shot towards the far sideline, keeping her team's 1-0 advantage intact.

She and Young each lead the Aggies with two defensive saves apiece. Young led all America East Conference players in this category entering Friday's contest.

Friday's match also marked the first home event in three weeks for the Aggies. After hosting Northeastern in its home opener on Aug. 26, the team embarked on a season-long five-match road trip that included stops in Ohio for multiple games, and Boston for another two contests.
