EUGENE, Ore. - UC Davis standout Erika Barr earned All-America second-team honors on Saturday after finishing 11th in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Div. I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Oregon.
Barr, a senior from Simi Valley, became the Aggies' second-ever All-American in the event, joining teammate Katie Fry who finished 14th overall in 2013 after barely missing a berth in the final. Barr, who earned her spot in the championship race after placing sixth in her semifinal heat on Thursday, was timed in 10:20.87 on Saturday while racing before a national television audience on ESPN.
Courtney Frerichs of New Mexico, the top steeplechaser in the country entering the meet, rolled to a dominating win. She set a collegiate record of 9:24.41 and beat runner-up Jessica Kamilos of Arkansas (9:41.28) by 17 seconds. Barr had a career-best time of 10:01.60 in her semifinal race and was facing a field in the final that ended up having eight runners break 10 minutes.
The race brought Barr's outstanding Aggie career to a close. She finished ranked No. 2 all-time in the event at UC Davis, is two-time defending Big West champion, and became the program's first-ever steeplechaser to advance to the national final. Barr also concludes her career ranked ninth at UC Davis in the 1,500 (4:24.82).
She helped lead the Aggie team to the Big West Championship in May at Long Beach State. It was the program's fourth conference title in the past five years.
