STANFORD, Calif. - Three birdies helped senior Andrea Wong post a solid second round of 1-over 72 during the second round of the NCAA Div. I Women's Golf Stanford Regional on Friday while keeping her in the hunt for a coveted berth to the national finals later this month.
Wong is currently 2 over and tied for 11th heading into Saturday's final round. Paige Lee, who played in the same group as Wong on Friday, finished with a 79 and is tied for 56th at 10 over.
The top three players that are not on one of the six teams that will qualify for nationals will move on to the next round as well. Based on the standings after the second round, Wong is tied for fourth among such players.
"Having Andrea and Paige play in the same group today was a great experience," said head coach Anna Temple. "Andrea played very steady and made her game work for her today. Paige also looked very solid. She had two tee shots that put her in a difficult position but otherwise played very steady.
"Andrea is in a great position to play well tomorrow and Paige has had several great rounds on this course, and she'll have to do so tomorrow to put herself back in position," Temple added. "It will be a very exciting third round for the field."
Stanford's Mariah Stackhouse and Alana Uriell of Arkansas are currently tied atop the leaderboard at 3 under. Just five players are under par through 36 holes. Twelfth-ranked Stanford (+1) holds a two-shot lead over No. 2 USC (+3) and then it's 13 shots back to third-place Ohio State (+16).
Both Wong and Lee got off to great starts thanks to early birdies. Lee birdied the par-5, 501-yard first hole while Wong picked hers up on the par-3 third. Wong went on to make her turn even and then dipped into red numbers with a birdie on the par-5 12th hole. Three pars and two bogeys the rest of the way brought her in to the clubhouse with a 72.
A birdie on the par-3 eighth hole put Lee at par overall but a stretch of three holes that she played 6 over slowed her momentum. She was 5 over on the back but had a birdie on another long par-5, the 503-yard 16th hole.
UC Davis last had a individual player in the NCAA Finals in 2009 when Alice Kim went on to finish in a tie for eighth.
Wong will tee off the final round from the first hole at 8:20 a.m. on Saturday while Lee will start on the 10th at the same time.
