Oregon explodes in second half against Aggies

Box Score April 10, 2016

Final Stats

EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Ellie Delich, freshman Taylor Cuenin and senior Courtney Neff each scored goals but UC Davis surrendered nine unanswered goals down the stretch in a 15-3 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse setback to Oregon at Papé Field Sunday afternoon.

The Aggies even their record to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in conference. The Ducks improve to 9-5 for the year and 4-3 in MPSF games. The two teams remain in the virtual tie for fourth in the conference standings; however, Oregon now holds the first tiebreaker for tournament seeding.

Freshman Shannon Cross and junior Melissa Kellan each had assists for UC Davis. Goalie Lauren Ali posted nine saves, including five in the first half to help keep the Aggies in the hunt with a 4-2 deficit. Senior midfielder Mary Doyle led all players with four draw controls while Neff picked up four ground balls.

For Oregon, sophomore midfielder Mariah Gatti netted a game-high five goals while senior Carly O'Connell added three goals and four assists for seven total points.

The Aggies fell into a 4-0 hole during the first 10 minutes before Kellan assisted Delich to break up the run in the 11th minute. Junior Tess Kevorkian won the ensuing draw, then Cross fed Cuenin just five second later to bring the score to 4-2. UC Davis nearly trimmed the deficit to a single goal on the next draw: Doyle won possession then took the next shot, but the ball caromed off the pipe. Doyle picked Devan Michael for a steal on the subsequent clearing attempt but the Aggies were unable to get a shot.

Oregon held that 4-2 lead at halftime, then extended its advantage to 6-2 on consecutive goals from Gatti. Neff scored on a drive in the 35th minute to bring UC Davis to within a 6-3 deficit, but that proved to be the last of the offense. Oregon scored nine unanswered to finish the contest, while the Aggies managed just two shots during the same run.

Overall, UC Davis was outshot by a 35-9 margin, including 18-3 after the break. The Aggies also struggled in transition in the second half, breaking 4 of 7 clearing attempts among their 11 turnovers in that frame.

UC Davis returns to action for an MPSF road game at Stanford on April 17. First draw is noon.
