DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore goalie Lauren Ali tallied a career-high 17 saves but UC Davis went scoreless in the second half, falling 14-3 to Colorado in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse action at Aggie Stadium Friday afternoon.
The Aggies slip to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in conference. The Buffaloes improve to 8-2 for the year and remain unbeaten in MPSF play at 3-0.
Senior Mary Doyle, senior Courtney Neff and freshman Shannon Cross each had goals for UC Davis, all in the first 21:40 of the contest. Senior Ellie Delich had the Aggies' lone assist, to Cross in that 22nd minute. For CU, junior Johnna Fusco and sophomore Carly Cox each posted hat tricks while another junior midfielder, Marie Moore, had two goals with two assists. Ali's counterpart, Paige Soenksen, notched eight saves against the three goals for a .727 average.
The Aggies drew first blood in the contest, with Neff converting an eight-meter opportunity just 70 seconds after the opening draw, and Doyle scoring on a rebound and putback about two minutes later. The Buffs quickly equalized with goals in the fourth and ninth minutes, beginning a long scoreless stretch in the contest. Ali recorded four stops during the next 13 minutes before Cross netted the go-ahead with 8:20 remaining in the half. Neff scored again with seven minutes left but the goal was disallowed after the required stick inspection. Fusco tied the game at 3-3 in the 25th minute, then had one of her own goals disqualified just 30 seconds later.
Colorado took the lead for good in the final minute before halftime, as Darby Kiernan's interception ended an Aggie transition and gave way to a Moore-to-Cox connection with 39 ticks remaining. The Buffs made it 5-3 with their goal at the buzzer.
Colorado outshot UC Davis by a 22-5 margin in the second half. The Buffaloes also committed just two turnovers after the break, compared to eight before. The Aggies also struggled from eight meters, shooting 0-for-3 in such spots during the second half.
Ali had 10 of her 17 saves in the second half, surpassing her previous high of 13 set against Temple earlier this year. That performance also puts her into a tie for eighth on the school's single-game list with Kristen Braasch, who holds the Aggie benchmark of 21.
