STANFORD, Calif. - Luke Vivolo shot out to a 4-under front nine and the first-round lead at the Stanford Golf Course on Thursday morning, and the UC Davis men's golf team had a big day overall as the Aggies shot a 3-under team score to take an early lead over 25 other teams at The Goodwin, including two ranked in the top 10 nationally.

Vivolo finished with a 5-under 65 to lead the 138-player field by a stroke while Ben Corfee shot 68 and is tied for sixth. Patrick Soli finished with a par-70 and is tied for 17th while Ryan Knop finished with a 74 and is tied for 65th. Newcomer Brandon Baumgarten shot a 79 while Evan Knight, playing as an individual, carded a 71.

The Aggies are the only team below par. Host Stanford, ranked eighth, is in second three shots behind UC Davis while the Cardinal's "B" team is in third, four shots off the pace. Seven teams ranked in Golfstat's top 40, including No. 1 USC, are competing in this weekend's event. The Aggies are ranked 101st.

"Today was a very good start for us," said head coach Cy Williams. "Luke and Ben did a really nice job today leading the team. They're playing some really good golf."

Vivolo was blistering on the front nine holes of the 6,727-yard Stanford Golf Course. He birdied the par-4 first hole and then added birdies on the fourth, sixth and seventh holes to make his turn at 4-under 31. He added two more birdies and had just one bogey on the day. Vivolo leads 19th-ranked Aaron Wise of Oregon by a shot and three others by two.

Corfee is in a group that's just three shots behind after capitalizing on five birdies. He was 1 under on each side of the course and had only two holes with something besides a birdie or par. He birdied two of his final three holes to come in with a 68.

Soli was consistent with three birdies and par scores on both the front and back nine. He birdied the first hole; one of three Aggies in the lineup to do so. Knop was just 1 over after nine holes while Baumgarten was just three over before bogeys down the stretch. Knight had an impressive afternoon which was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 16th that helped him cover the final nine holes a shot under par.

After opening the tournament in the morning wave of teams, UC Davis will move to the afternoon Friday and play with Marquette and Arizona beginning at 1:20.
