Feb. 29, 2016

Results and live scoring

TUCSON, Ariz.
- Senior Luke Vivolo put together an error-free round that included two birdies and 16 pars for a 2-under 70 on Monday while freshman Ryan Knop carded a 72, as the UC Davis men's golf team finished the second day of the National Invitational Tournament in 10th place.

UC Davis shot 2-over 290 on the par-72 Omni Tucson National-Catalina Course and is 2 over through 36 holes. The Aggies are just one back of ninth-place New Mexico State (+2) and two away from Colorado State (E), which is eighth. Overall, UC Davis is within striking distance of several teams.

"We're only 13 shots out of first place and six shots out of third so we just have to get hot with the putter and have some guys go low," said head coach Cy Williams. "We're due to do something a little crazy."

Vivolo's round put him 2 under and in a tie for 14th on the players' leaderboard while Knop, who opened with a 71 on Sunday, is 1 under over and tied for 19th. Ben Corfee (+3) is tied for 34th after shooting 75 in the second round, Evan Knight (+5) is tied for 48th after carding a 73, and Patrick Soli's 78 put him 7 over and tied for 59th.

Santa Clara took over sole possession of first place at 11 under, opening a five-shot advantage over Nevada, which it was tied with after the opening day. New Mexico, ranked 48th, is third at 4 under while Iowa State and Wyoming are tied for fourth at 3 under.

Vivolo was steady throughout his round, picking up a par on the second hole and then adding another on the 10th. Otherwise, he strung together pars on the remaining 16 holes to shoot UC Davis' best round of the week. Knop had an up-and-down start that had two bogeys and a birdie in his first four holes. He was 2 over through seven but then birdied two of the next three holes before coming in with eight straight pars to shoot 72.

Like Vivolo, Knight had a steady round for the Aggies, opening his day with 10 consecutive pars before his lone bogey preceded seven straight pars to end it. Corfee had runs of seven and five pars in a row, respectively, and then closed with a birdie on the 18th, while Soli had two birdies and was just 1 over before a rough finish.

Nick Voke of Iowa State shot a 65 and is 11 under to hold a one-shot lead over Hayden Shieh of Santa Clara.

The Aggies will tee of their final round at 7 a.m. (Pacific) on Tuesday on the 10th hole and will play with Stephen F. Austin and Notre Dame.
