Feb. 17, 2016 DAVIS, Calif. - Kaylin Squyres, who wrapped up her UC Davis career as one of the all-time kills leaders last fall, has been invited to the U.S. Women's National Team tryouts at the U.S. Olympic Training Center from Friday through Sunday this weekend.
U.S. head coach Karch Kiraly and his staff will evaluate more than 220 athletes from 88 colleges and universities from around the country for spots on either the Women's National Team or Collegiate National Team. The tryouts are open to any players, although a portion of the participants â€" including Squyres â€" are specifically invited to attend.
Furthermore, the tryout will be live-streamed at http://www.teamusa.org/usa-volleyball/usa-teams/indoor-volleyball/women/national-team-tryouts . USA Volleyball will also aggregate social media content via the hashtag #USAVTryout throughout the weekend.
"I am very excited to get the chance to play with and compete against the best volleyball players in the country," said Squyres. "I am so proud to have gotten here and am so grateful for this opportunity. I plan to just have fun getting to play volleyball again and enjoy my time."
Squyres is one of just six players and the lone senior from the Big West Conference to earn an invitation. Long Beach State's Mykah Wilson and Ashley Murray, Hawaii's Nikki Taylor, Cal Poly's Taylor Nelson and Adlee Van Winden each will vie for spots in the TeamUSA program. Taylor captured Big West Player of the Year honors in 2015 while Van Winden was the Freshman of the Year.
Originally from Rocklin's Whitney High School and the Northern California Volleyball Club, Squyres twice earned first-team All-Big West Conference honors during her four years as an Aggie. As a senior, she became just the second UC Davis player â€" and the first in 25 years â€" to amass both 400 kills and 400 digs in a season. Squyres finished with 1,197 career kills, sixth all-time in program annals, while adding 890 digs and 91 aces. She was also a three-time Big West All-Academic honoree.
