Feb. 15, 2016

Live scoring and results

LA QUINTA, Calif. - Senior Luke Vivolo shot a 1-over 72 on Monday, senior Patrick Soli had four birdies and finished with a 73 and the UC Davis men's golf team open solidly in eighth place in a powerful field at The Prestige at PGA WEST it's co-hosting with Stanford at the Greg Norman Course.

The Aggies shot a collective 9-over 293 in the opening round and are in a close battle with four other schools that are separated by just four shots. LSU, ranked 28th, blitzed the challenging course for a 7-under 277 to take a five-shot lead over No. 5-ranked Stanford (-2). They were the only teams to break par.

Vivolo's round, which he pushed to 2 under before a tough ending to his day, put him in a tie for for 18th-place while Soli is tied for 24th. Senior Ben Corfee and Evan Knight are each tied for 32nd after firing 74s, and Ryan Knop had a 77 and is tied for 66th. Nicolas Noya, playing as an individual shot a 75 and is tied for 42nd while Jesse Bratz, also an individual this week, is tied for 71st after shooting 79.

"We played really well," said Aggie coach Cy Williams. "I think we were in third place with three holes to go and we just had a rough finish so we were really close. Some of the guys had a rough start but came back nicely."

The Prestige at PGA WEST, currently in its 16th year, is showcasing four top-10 teams â€" No. 6 Duke, No. 7 USC and No. 9 Arizona State, in addition to Stanford â€" as well as highly ranked LSU, No. 25 San Diego State and No. 41 Pepperdine.

Vivolo had three birdies on Monday and made his turn just a shot over par. A birdie on the par-4 11th and an impressive eagle on the par-5, 566-yard 12th got him to 2 under which is where he was until three bogeys over his final three holes pushed him just above par.

Soli had an early double-bogey and was 3 over after just three holes but he used his quartet of birdies to help him go 1 under the rest of the way and move into the top 25. Knight was just 1 over midway through his round before going to 3 over with three to play, but used an eagle on the par-5, 537-yard 16th to help his cause.

Corfee posted 11 pars and was even on the back nine while Knop was only a shot above par after nine holes to help highlight his day. Noya had the best front nine for the Aggies, turning it around after a bogey on his first hole to play the remaining eight holes 2 under, while Bratz rebounded after a rough start that saw him 7 over midway to go just 1 over on the back.

"This is a strong golf course and it's in perfect condition," said Williams. "You have to be a good golfer. Look at the strength of this field and only two teams broke par. I love this golf course. It's fair and it's hard."

Pepperdine's Frederick Weidel shot a 5-under 66 to hold a one-shot lead over Brandon Wu of Stanford and a two-shot advantage over five other players on the individual leaderboard, including defending medalist Maverick McNealy of Stanford who is the No. 2-ranked amateur player in the world. Arizona State's Jon Rahm, the world's top-ranked amateur, is among a large group lurking at 1 under.

UC Davis will tee off the second round beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday and will play with San Diego State and Saint Mary's.
