DAVIS, Calif. - Senior middle blocker Aima Eichie captured first-team distinction while freshman Lauren Matias and senior Kendall Walbrecht earned honorable mention, representing UC Davis on the All-Big West Conference women's volleyball teams as announced by the league office on Monday. Matias also made the Big West All-Freshman Team.
Eichie, originally from Castle Rock, Colorado, finished the season with 150 kills, a .345 average and 69 total blocks despite missing 10 matches due to injury. She ranked fifth in the conference in both hitting percentage and blocks per set (0.99), and enjoyed a run of three straight matches of .500 or better efficiency in early November. Eichie's season clip of .345 puts her third in school history while her final .285 average lists her fourth on the UC Davis career list.
Walbrecht, a 2015 All-Big West honoree from La Cañada, also missed a large portion of the preseason due to injury but returned in time to compile totals of 175 kills, a .234 hitting average and 38 total blocks in 62 sets. She posted 11 matches of double-figure kills in 2016, including 22 and 21 in home matches against Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly, respectively. Walbrecht also highlighted her final season with all-tournament honors at the UND Classic in August.
Matias, an alumna of Harbor High School in Santa Cruz, led UC Davis with 2.92 kills per set while her 292 total scores fell just eight shy of sophomore Emily Allen for the team lead. She also posted 153 digs and 59 blocks while serving as one of the Aggies' primary passers. In conference play, Matias improved to 3.30 kills per set, with a boost from her conference-best 34 kills at Cal State Fullerton on October 8. That matched earned her one of two Big West Freshman of the Week awards this season.
UC Davis has now sent a player to the Big West All-Freshman team in three consecutive years. Eichie made the rookie squad back in 2014, while middle blocker Kelechi Ohiri earned such honors last year.
The Aggies finished 14-15 overall and tied for fifth in the Big West with a 7-9 league mark.Â
