DAVIS, Calif. - The 2016 women's volleyball season comes to a close in a rare Tuesday night match at Cal Poly, with the Aggies looking to close out with a winning record. UC Davis enters at 14-14 overall and 7-8 in Big West Conference play.
A victory would give head coach Dan Conners his second plus-.500 season in his three-year tenure at the helm. His teams finished 15-14 and 15-15 in each of the two previous seasons.
The Aggies come off one of their best offensive performances of the league season, with freshman Lauren Matias (14 kills), senior Aima Eichie (12 kills, .500 average) and senior Kendall Walbrecht (10 kills, one error) cracking double figures in a 3-0 sweep of UC Irvine. As a team, UC Davis hit .308 for its best success rate since going .353 at Cal State Fullerton and just the second time above .300 this year.
Coach Conners commended the play of his setters, senior Sophia Mar and sophomore Maddie Merlino, and rightly so. Sophomores Emily Allen, Brianna Karsseboom and Kelechi Ohiri each added six kills to the effort, making for a balanced attack that has characterized the Aggies at their best moments this year. In fact, UC Davis has ranked either third or fourth among the Big West in kills for most of the year, yet currently has no player averaging more than three per set. Matias, Walbrecht and Allen rank 15th through 17th with averages between 2.85 and 2.87.
Similarly, Tuesday's opponent gets heavy offensive production from a crew of hard hitters. Cal Poly sophomore Adlee Van Winden ranks fourth in the Big West with 3.70 kps, junior Raeann Greisen is seventh at 3.45, while senior opposite Taylor Gruenewald rates second in the league with a .360 average (just ahead of Eichie's .355). The Mustangs came back from a 2-1 match deficit to beat the Aggies in five in the previous meeting, with that trio posting kills totals of 19, 14 and 17. Another sophomore left-sider, Alexis Clewis, added 14 kills for just her second double-digit attacking night of the Big West season.
Tuesday's match closes out the careers for four UC Davis seniors: Mar, Walbrecht, Eichie and outside hitter Allie Wegener. Eichie, actually a redshirt junior, should finish third on the school's season hitting percentage list, behind only Victoria Lee (.403 in 2013) and Betsy Sedlak (.395 in 2010). Her .288 career average will put her fourth on that list behind Lee (.361), Sedlak (.336) and Hall of Famer Candy Lench (.309).
Other milestones of note: Bolko needs just 16 digs to break 400 for the year -- impressive given that she didn't move to the libero position until she replaced injured freshman Heather Reed in early October. With 118 total blocks and a 1.27 per-set average, Ohiri has a shot at cracking the program's top five in each of those categories. She would need 11 stuffs to enter the former list, but maintaining her pace should put her in the season average list.
The 2016 season already features a few key accomplishments. The September 17 win over then-No. 17 Santa Clara marked just the third time UC Davis has defeated a team ranked in the AVCA Division I Top 25.
Among conference superlatives, Matias' 34 kills at Cal State Fullerton remains the highest by any Big West player this year. Adding Allen's 30 kills vs. Southern Utah on September 9 means the Aggies were the only Big West team to have two 30-kill performances. Bolko was one of just three players in the league to enjoy a 30-dig night, which she did in that October 8 win over the Titans. Finally, UC Davis' 76 digs at Omaha on August 27 represents one of two matches in which a Big West team averaged more than 25 per set.Â
