SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Siler Schneider led a trio of double-digit UC Davis scorers by posting a career-high 22 points, Brynton Lemar and Lawrence White added 14 and 13 respectively and Chima Moneke recorded a team-high 14 rebounds in his Aggie debut during Friday's season opener at the Cable Car Classic in Santa Clara, California.
UC Davis trailed by as many as 15 points early in the first half, but stormed back to take its first lead of the evening shortly after halftime, thanks to its stifling defense and its ability to knock down shots from three. When White connected on a shot from distance just before the game's final media timeout, UC Davis held a 57-56 lead with 4:30 remaining. But it was a 12-1 run in the 2:46 that followed the senior guard's three that helped Tennessee State pull away and secure a 78-64 victory.
UC Davis will return to the Leavey Center for Saturday night's 6 p.m. game against Santa Clara with a 0-1 record; Tennessee State will continue tournament play with a 1-0 record.
Trailing 20-8 midway through the opening half, UC Davis showed the Tigers firsthand why it was the No. 1 defense in the Big West by forcing five turnovers within a six-minute timespan, and preventing them from scoring a basket for the final 7:33 to pull within three at the break.
Consecutive second-half threes from Schneider pulled the Aggies even for the first time in the game at 32-32, but it was a jumper from Lemar that gave his team its first lead of the evening two minutes later. The senior guard's shot capped a wild minute of action that saw Tennessee State's Christian Mekowulu pick up two quick fouls before being disqualified after earning a technical.
Mekowulu's frustration mirrored that of his teammates; UC Davis simply outplayed its opponents from the 10-minute mark in the first half, until it took the lead in the opening minutes of the second. And once the Aggies held an advantage, they were able to match the Tigers shot-for-shot as the game progressed.
After UC Davis pulled ahead, 39-37 lead, six tied scores and five lead changes took place in a game that turned into a nailbiter.
Following White's trey, Tennessee State responded with a three of its own to lead by two entering the under-4 timeout. A layup, followed by a bank-shot straightaway three, gave TSU an eight-point advantage with 2:21 remaining.
Since it struggled to connect from the floor, TSU took advantage of a whistle-plagued second half to keep the Aggies within striking distance once it entered the bonus with more than 15 minutes remaining. Of the Tigers' 38 trips to the stripe, all but seven took place after halftime; they nearly scored as many second-half points at the line (21) as they did from the floor (24).
Tahjere McCall led TSU with 20 points, teammate Wayne Martin recorded a double-double on 19 points and 15 boards.
