Oct. 9, 2016 DAVIS, Calif. - Junior attacker Spencer Galli scored two goals while sophomore utility Sasa Antunovic contributed game highs of three assists and four steals, but No. 11 UC Davis ultimately fell short by a 15-8 final to No. 1 UCLA in collegiate men's water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday.
The Aggies move to 12-4 for the year. The Bruins, winners of 52 straight, improve to 19-0 overall. Galli was one of seven scorers for UC Davis.
Tennyson May,
Marcus Anderson,
Nick Coufal,
Cory Laidig,
Riley Venne and
Eric Martel also netted goals. For UCLA, junior utility Alex Roelse posted three goals and two assists while providing four steals on the defensive end. Matt Farmer, Ryder Roberts, Chancellor Ramirez and Max Irving supplied two goals each, while goalkeeper Garrett Danner had 14 saves and four steals. UC Davis took a 2-0 lead to start the game, with May scoring out of set at the 6:24 mark, then Galli finding the net 75 seconds later. However, UCLA responded with three unanswered to end the first quarter, then extended its run to five straight on Patrick Fellner's goal with 5:19 left in the second. Anderson and Coufal each scored in the second quarter for UC Davis, which trailed 8-4 at the halftime break. Laidig converted a 6-on-5 chance to start the third quarter, bringing the Aggies to within a three-goal margin. However, UCLA matched its hosts goal for goal in the third to stay in front by an 11-7 margin, then put up four more in the fourth to pull away to the victory. Overall, UC Davis shot 8-for-28 in the contest compared to UCLA's 15-for-27. The Bruins' 52nd win breaks the NCAA record for consecutive wins. Coincidentally, the previous record was set by a UC Davis alumnus: Aggie Legacy Award winner Dante Dettamanti guided Stanford to 51 straight victories in the mid-1980s. UC Davis resumes Western Water Polo Association play with a road contest at Fresno Pacific on October 16, then returns home for a Friday conference game against Air Force on October 21.
