UC Davis hosts Blue-Gold Intrasquad Scrimmage

DAVIS, Calif. -- Fans of the UC Davis women's swimming and diving team will be able to get their first look at the 2016-17 squad this weekend, welcoming home alumnae from seasons past for the annual Blue-Gold Intrasquad scrimmage at the Schaal Aquatics Center on Saturday (Oct. 8) at 3:30 p.m.

The Aggies' roster will be divided into two teams, competing for squad bragging rights over 16 events in the program's inaugural competition of the season. It marks the first of five home events for UC Davis, which officially opens the campaign on the road with a dual at Loyola Marymount on Oct. 21, before taking part in a five-team meet at UCLA on Oct. 22.

Last season, newcomers Solie Laughlin (100 and 200 back) and Mia Facey (200 and 50 free) burst onto the scene with a pair of wins in their Aggie debuts, while fellow freshman Eva Chung took home the title in the 500 free. Hilvy Cheung (100 fly, 200 fly, 200 IM) and Kirsten Brand (800 and 100 free) also posted multiple wins, while Serena Yee won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events.

Entering the 2016-17 season, UC Davis returns 26 members of last season's squad that brought home it's fourth Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title in the six-year history of the conference, out-distancing second-place Hawai'i by 62 points. Laughlin, the MPSF Freshman of the Year, took home three individual titles while also swimming a leg of the champion 400 medley relay squad, while Cheung defended her title in the 200 fly and also joined Laughlin, Hailey Ferko, and Kirsten Brand on the 400 medley relay team.

Cheung made her second appearance at the NCAA Championships in 2016, finishing 31st during the prelims of the 100 fly after entering the event ranked 36th in the field, and set a school record in the prelims of the 200 fly (1:56.07) a day later, finishing 17th overall and ending the day just two-tenths out of a spot in the final 16.

They form the core of a roster that welcomes eight newcomers: a seven-member freshman class that includes high school All-America selections Mia Cunnan, Cora McClelland, Olivia Smith, and Macayla Thomas, as well as transfer Layna Auchard, who was a two-time California Community College Athletics Association state champion in the 200 breast at Foothill College.

On the boards, the Aggies will have to compensate for the loss of Lucy Lafranchise and Audrey DeNeffe, who combined for six trips to the NCAA Zone Championships in their careers. Senior Serena Yee leads the returning group after earning All-MPSF honors on both the 1- and 3-meter boards, and is joined by all-conference honorees Jessica Fernandez, Shaifali Goyal, and Angelina Proshak.

In all, a total of 19 members of last year's team earned a combined 52 All-MPSF awards, led by seven all-conference honors apiece by Cheung and Kirsten Brand.
