Two-goal week helps Wilson to Big West honors

Oct. 31, 2016

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis junior midfielder Noah Wilson was named the Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon, following a two-goal week that helped his team clinch a berth in the upcoming Big West Tournament.

It is the first career weekly honor for Wilson, who joins sophomore teammate Roy Boateng as Aggie honorees this season. Boateng was named the league's defensive player of the week back on Aug. 29 following the first weekend of the regular season.

After giving his team a lead with a goal in the 27th minute in an overtime loss against Cal Poly earlier in the week, Wilson scored, perhaps, his most important goal of the season just eight minutes and 12 seconds into last Sunday's match at UC Santa Barbara, getting his head on a pass from Onah Power for the only goal of the contest in a 1-0 victory over the Gauchos.

The triumph gave the Aggies the much-needed three points in the standings to move ahead of Cal Poly for the third and final tournament spot out of the North Division, while handing UCSB its first conference defeat of the year. It was UC Davis' first win in Santa Barbara since 2012 and the team's first shutout of the Gauchos since 2014.

Wilson now leads the team with six goals and 15 points on the season -- both of which rank among the top 10 on the school's single-season Division I lists. He enters this weekend's opening round of the tournament ranked ninth in the league in shots (35), tied for seventh in points (15), eighth in points per game (0.79), tied for fifth in goals (6), and tied for seventh in goals per game (0.32).

UC Davis is the only member of the league to qualify for the Big West Tournament in each of the last six years, opening this season's event at two-time defending tournament champion Cal State Fullerton on Saturday (Nov. 5) at 7 p.m., at Titan Stadium.

The Aggies and Titans have met twice before in Big West Tournament play, with UC Davis posting a 2-0 win in the first round in 2012, and Fullerton responding with a 2-1 win in 2014 -- both matches played at the Aggie Soccer Field in Davis, Calif.
