BERKELEY, Calif. - After a grueling double-overtime match in Friday's league opener, UC Davis' turnaround was a quick one because field hockey returned to action Sunday afternoon in its first road conference contest of the year. Against a Cal squad coming off a weeklong hiatus, two early Bears goals helped the host team top the Aggies by a 5-1 score.
UC Davis will head to Iowa for its upcoming matches next weekend vs. Central Michigan and Iowa with a 3-8 overall and 0-2 league record. With Sunday's result from Underhill Field, Cal improves to 3-6 and 1-0.
Aiding Cal's cause were two early goals, scored within the first eight minutes of the match. As the half progressed, the Bears tacked on another two goals in the 26th and 31st minutes to double its lead at halftime.
Thanks to a goal scored by Eden Borsack in the 52nd minute, off one of UC Davis' six corners taken throughout the afternoon, the Aggies began to cut into the Golden Bears' lead, with plenty of time still remaining to continue their comeback effort.
A yellow card, handed to UC Davis in the 58th minute, initially took away some of the momentum earned with Borsack's strike. However, it was the Aggies who were the more aggressive team, even with one less player, throughout the following minutes.
Shortly after the clock started on UC Davis' penalty, the team earned two penalty corners and recorded the only shot by either team while it competed one player down. With 10 seconds remaining until the Aggies returned to full strength, a green card was given to Cal, which allowed UC Davis to play with an advantage of its own for 1:50.
Once Gabi Jimenez took a seat on the sidelines, UC Davis earned its final corner of the afternoon, which led to the team's final shot of the day, taken by Kate Young.
Until the Bears were awarded a 70th-minute penalty stroke, the Aggies' defense did not allow Cal to take a shot throughout the preceding 28:49.
