Oct. 1, 2016 SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sophomore Riley Venne, sophomore Ido Goldschmidt and freshman Eric Martel each scored three goals to lead No. 10 UC Davis to a 15-7 win over No. 20 Santa Clara in a Western Water Polo Association men's game at Sullivan Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies move to 11-3 for the year and open their conference season at 1-0. The Broncos slip to 5-8 overall and 1-1 in WWPA play. Besides the UC Davis trio of hat tricks, senior team captain

Marcus Anderson and
Carlo Burney announced for the remaining four tallies. For SCU, seniors Will Grant and Graham McClone combined for five of their team's goals. Freshmen Mac Carey and Jack Larkin had one goal apiece. The Aggies never trailed in the contest. Venne and Goldschmidt opened with two goals before McClone broke the seal on the UC Davis cage with his 6-on-5 conversion with 3:45 left in the first quarter. Olson-Fabbro answered immediately after the restart to push the Aggies back up by two. After Grant's goal early in the second brought the tally to 5-3, UC Davis scored six unanswered through the halftime break to craft a commanding 11-3 edge. Martel scored on a power play with 44 ticks left before the intermission, then added another with just eight seconds left. The Broncos never approached by closer than seven goals for the rest of the way. UC Davis continued to take advantage of its 6-on-5 chances, converting three such opportunities in the second half. The Aggies continue conference play on the road at Cal Baptist on Thursday, then return home for a Sunday showdown with UCLA.
