DAVIS, Calif. - Junior Hilvy Cheung won three events, including the two final individual races, to help UC Davis rally from an 23-point deficit to a 154-140 victory over UC Santa Barbara in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's swimming and diving dual meet Saturday afternoon at Schaal Aquatics Center.
Cheung led a 1-2-3 Aggie sweep in the 200-yard butterfly with her winning time of two minutes, 2.24 seconds; dominated the 100 butterfly field with a 56.11 clocking, then edged Gaucho veteran Katie Records with a 2:05.83 in the next race, the 200 individual medley. In all, Cheung amassed 27 points toward her team's total, not counting her contribution in UC Davis' second-place 200 medley relay.
Senior and distance freestyler Lexy Troup also picked up key wins for the Aggies, who trailed in the team scoring for most of the meet. Troup went 10:28.30 in the 1,000 free, more than five seconds faster than UCSB's Reid Whaley (10:33.69), then joined teammate Kirsten Brand in a 1-2 finish in the 500-yard haul. Troup touched home in 5:04.71 with Brand placing second at 5:06.69.
The Aggie diving crew also accounted for a 32-point swing, as the Gauchos did not field competitors in those events. Seniors Audrey DeNeffe and Lucy Lafranchise placed first (278.17) and second (270.22), respectively, on the 3-meter board. That tandem switched places in the 1-meter competition, with Lafranchise scoring 282.00 â€" well ahead of DeNeffe's 258.90.
Troup, DeNeffe and Lafranchise were among nine total UC Davis seniors honored in the Senior Day festivities. Fifth-year veterans Sara Ramos and Cara Silvas, fourth-years Marissa Brown, Hailey Ferko and Madeline Benavidez; and former transfer Brittany Rojo also competed in their final home meets on Saturday.
Freshman Solie Laughlin claimed the only other Aggie event win, posting a 2:01.04 in the 200 backstroke to outpace UCSB's Cheyenne Low at 2:01.69. This offset the results of the 100 back, in which Low (56.12) edged Laughlin (56.17). However, the closest margin of victory came in the meet's third race, the 200 freestyle. Records touched with a winning time of 1:53.43, only one hundredth of a second ahead of UC Davis' Kirsten Brand at 1:53.44.
The Aggies trailed by as much as 77-54 midway through the meet and by 111-93 entering the 500 freestyle. Troup and Brand reduced the deficit to 11 with their top two places, then Cheung's win helped tie the meet at 121-121. The 1-meter diving and 200 individual medley pulled UC Davis ahead for good.
The Aggies, now 4-2 in dual meets for the year, close out their dual season at Pacific on January 30. The MPSF Championships take place from February 17-20 in Monterey Park, California.
