GLENCOE, Ill. - Behind second-round scores of 1-under 70 from Ben Corfee, Patrick Soli and Jesse Bratz, the UC Davis men's golf team raced toward the top of the leaderboard on Sunday and is tied for fourth place after two rounds of the Windon Memorial, being hosted by Northwestern at Lake Shore Country Club.
The Aggies opened the 54-hole tournament with a 3-over 287 in Sunday's morning round before bettering that by two shots with a 2-under 282 in the afternoon. That left them tied for fourth with Ohio State at 1 over.
Purdue (-15) stormed to an eight-stroke lead over Michigan (-7) with the host Wildcats (-3) in third in the 14-team tournament. Princeton (+5) is the closest team to the Aggies and Buckeyes.
Corfee's second round put him in a tie for 12th at 1 under, Luke Vivolo is in 17th at par and Soli is tied for 18th at 1 over. Bratz's solid second round was a six-shot improvement over his first-round 76 and tied him for 41st at 4 over. Freshman Ryan Knop is 3 over and tied for 32nd.
"I thought we did a lot of good things today and I also thought we still have quite a bit of small things we can clean up out there," said head coach Cy Williams. "It was good to see our guys get to 6 under during the second round and with a little better decision-making we can build on that."
Corfee, Soli and Bratz combined for 11 birdies during their rounds of 70, with Soli leading the way with five. He had three on the front nine, including back-to-back birdies on the par-3 sixth hole and the par-5 seventh. Corfee also birdied the sixth and seventh holes. Bratz used a pair of birdies to play the front nine a shot under par and was even on the back.
The Aggie trio was backed up by good rounds from Vivolo and Knop, who each shot 72. Vivolo had three birdies on the back nine, including consecutive ones on the par-5 13th and par-3 14th, while Knop posted 15 pars in his round.
Vivolo led the way in the morning round with a 1-under 70 thanks to five birdies and a 1-under front nine. Corfee shot 71, playing the 12th through 18th holes 3 under. Soli and Knop each fired 73.
Stuart Macdonald of Purdue is 7 under after 36 holes and has a one-shot lead over Andrew Whalen of Northwestern.
One playing group was unable to finish their second round because of darkness and will complete play on Monday morning before teams tee off in the final round at 6 a.m. (PDT).
