PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - Senior Patrick Soli shot par-71 in the first round of the Saint Mary's Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Course on Monday, tying for seventh place and helping the UC Davis men's golf team tie for fifth after the tournament's first day.

Freshman Ryan Knop, playing in his first collegiate tournament, shot 72 and is tied for 14th, while Luke Vivolo, Evan Knight and Ben Corfee each carded rounds of 75 and are tied for 44th place. The Aggies are 9 over and knotted with Fresno State and Texas State in fifth place. They trail third-place Santa Clara and Washington State by three shots.

Host Saint Mary's is 5 under and has an eight-stroke lead over San Diego State. The University of San Diego's Alex Chiarella fired a 4-under 67 and leads Derek Bayley of Washington State by one shot.

Soli used birdies on the par-4 seventh hole and the par-5 ninth to make his turn a pair of shots under par before two bogeys on the back nine leveled his scorecard. Knop had four birdies, including ones on his first and last holes, to mix with five bogeys. Vivolo had five straight bogeys to begin his day but then rallied to play the final 13 holes one shot below par.

Knight had three birdies - one each on par-3, par-4 and par-5 holes - while Corfee opened his round in strong fashion by collecting three birdies to move to the back nine at 1 under.

The Aggies will play Tuesday's second round with Washington State and Fresno State. The 15-team tournament ends on Wednesday.

This week's tournament is the first on the Aggies' 2015-16 schedule.
