DAVIS, Calif. - For the second straight season, UC Davis and Bryant needed extra time to determine a victor after Kayla Wigney scored her first goal of the season with 1:02 remaining in regulation to tie Monday's non-conference match at 2-2. Jamie Garcia then scored the game-winning goal with 19 seconds remaining in overtime to help field hockey capture a 3-2 victory in its 2015 home opener at Aggie Field Hockey Facility.

The win is UC Davis' fourth in as many head-to-head meetings versus Bryant and improves the team's overall record this season to 1-1. The Bulldogs will return to Rhode Island with a 0-3 record after opening its season with a road swing through Northern California.

"This was a resilient effort from a team that continued to battle, regardless of the situation," said UC Davis head coach Tiffany Huisman.

"As was the case in our last game against No. 4 Syracuse, this team will work hard and compete for one another from start to finish."

Field hockey dominated Monday's match -- the first of four that will take place on campus this week, outshot the Bulldogs 31-6 and drew 12 of 13 penalty corners. The Aggies' shot total was three shy of a program record that was set on Oct. 30, 2010, when the team faced Pacific in a road league match.

In addition to posting her first game-winning goal since the 2013 season, Garcia also led her team with nine shots to tie Casey Wollbrinck, who recorded nine of her own in that 2010 matchup in Stockton, for the highest single-game individual shot total in program history.

Garcia was one of 10 Aggies who recorded an attempt against one of Bryant's two 'keepers; collectively, the pair saved seven shots compared to Erica Cohen who posted two saves in her first win in goal for UC Davis.

The Aggies jumped out to an early 1-0 lead five minutes after the match started when Danielle Koehne corralled a shot from Garcia, which originally bounced off the pads of Bryant goalkeeper Marissa Elizardo back into play, before punching it into the back of the Bulldogs' goal.

Twenty minutes later, Bryant capitalized on a penalty stroke opportunity to tie the score at 1-1 -- a mark that remained untouched heading into halftime.

In the 60th minute, the Bulldogs took the lead for the first time due to an unfortunate set of circumstances for the Aggies. A cross-turf pass, which was nothing more than a dumped shot in the direction of UC Davis' cage, caught the edge of the left post and ricocheted back towards the middle of the scoring arc. Victoria Danby, who happened to be in the right place at the right time, punched that innocuous pass over Cohen's right pad, which was squeezed against the right post throughout the entire play.

As was the case throughout the vast majority of the match, UC Davis controlled the pace of play throughout the final 10-plus minutes in an attempt to score the equalizer. The Aggies' hard work paid off with 62 seconds left in the second half when Wigney scored her first goal of the season, off a pass from teammate Lauren Mewes, which skipped through a sea of players before finding the junior forward's stick.

Now faced with an open field since field hockey overtime rules allow only seven players from each side to compete, UC Davis wasted no time in attacking its opponent's goal.

"Since everyone has a lot of area to cover [in overtime], I wanted to keep everyone's legs as fresh as possible and substitute quickly," said Huisman.

The Aggies outshot the Bulldogs 8-1 throughout the first 15-minute overtime period, with Garcia's ninth, final and record-tying attempt ending the match in her team's favor.

As was the case with UC Davis' first goal, it was a redirected shot off a rebound that helped field hockey open its season-long four-match homestand in a positive note. This time, it was Koehne who took the initial shot on cage, and it was Garcia who dove for the rebound and scored the golden goal with 19 seconds left in overtime.

A busy week of field hockey will continue for UC Davis when Saint Louis visits Aggie Field Hockey Facility on Thursday. That non-conference contest will commence at 1 p.m. Also visiting campus this week are Miami (OH) on Friday (4 p.m.) and Louisville this Sunday (12 p.m.).
