FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Elizabeth Landry scored four goals while juniors Mary Doyle and Courtney Neff added two each, as UC Davis overcame an early 2-0 deficit to claim an 11-6 victory over Fresno State in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse action at the FSU Soccer & Lacrosse Field Wednesday afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 2-9 and pick up their first conference win to move to 1-2. The Bulldogs slip to 3-8 overall and 1-5 in MPSF play.
Landry's output came as a result of a 26-14 shooting advantage, including a 15-5 margin at halftime, at which UC Davis held a close 4-2 lead. Senior Allie Lehner tallied a game-high seven draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers while Doyle added three steals and five ground balls to her offensive contributions. Junior Ellie Delich, junior Sam Axenroth and sophomore Melissa Kellan also scored for the Aggies.
Fresno State freshmen Nicole Ortlieb and Logan Eisinger had two goals each.
Despite a sizable advantage in time of possession, UC Davis fell into an early 2-0 hole, with Caroline Dineen-Carlson and Ortlieb netting goals within a span of less than three minutes. Neff put the Aggies on the board with her drive from the left side of the fan, then Landry equalized with her drive in the 14th minute. Neff then put the Aggies ahead by a 3-2 margin after taking a pass from Landry then traveling cross cage to find the top shelf in the 18th. Kellan connected on an eight-meter with just under five minutes left to extend the lead to two.
Fresno State had a chance to halve the lead just before halftime but senior Kai Murphy stopped Bulldog Marcy Levatino's attempt to finish a transition in the final seconds before the break.
Landry and Delich scored early in the second to extend the Aggie lead to four, only to have that edge quickly reduced back to two. Eisinger hit an eight-meter in the 38th minute, then a UC Davis turnover near its own offensive restraining line gave way to a Fuccillo fast-break goal in the 40th, setting the board at 6-4.
The Aggies responded with five unanswered to put away the win. Landry and Doyle combined for three eight-meter goals in that run while Axenroth notched her lone goal on a crease roll with 12:10 remaining. Landry then made it 11-4 with her tally with 3:02 to go. A few Aggie miscues through the midfield allowed the 'Dogs to tack on two late goals, but UC Davis had the clock on its side.
Wednesday's win snaps a streak of seven straight losses for the Aggies. The 11-goal output is also the team's highest since its 13-10 win over Detroit in early March.
UC Davis continues MPSF play at California on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
