April 5, 2015

Final Stats

DENVER - Senior attacker Elizabeth Landry scored two goals and senior defender Allie Lehner won three draw controls and a team-high five ground balls, but UC Davis fell short in a second-half comeback in a 9-5 loss to Denver in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Peter Barton Stadium.

The Aggies drop their seventh straight, moving to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in conference. The Pioneers improve to 7-3 for the year and 2-1 in MPSF play.

Sophomore Melissa Kellan added a goal and an assist while Courtney Neff and Ellie Delich each scored once for UC Davis. Senior goalkeeper Kai Murphy also kept her team within reach by recording 10 total saves, eight in the first half. As a team, the Aggies shot just 1-for-9 in the first half to fall into a 6-1 hole at the break. They also committed 21 turnovers and failed to score on four extra-man opportunities.

Rachael McKinnon led DU with three goals while Jill Remenapp added a goal and two assists.

Six different Pioneers scored a goal in crafting the 6-1 lead, with the lone goal coming from Landry immediately following the draw after Denver's third goal.

McKinnon, who converted an assist from Katherine Fischer to end the first half, scored back-to-back goals in the 41st and 43rd minutes to extend the Denver lead to 8-1. The Aggies called a timeout, then freshman Hannah Friel won the ensuing draw. Kellan scored seconds later to end the scoring drought.

Facing a 9-2 deficit down the final stretch, UC Davis scored three unanswered in an effort to close the gap, but simply ran out of time. Landry made it 9-3 with her goal from Kellan with 7:32 to go, then Delich and Neff connected in the final minute to bring the score to its final 9-5.

Sunday's game was marred by 74 total fouls and nine cards.
