BOULDER, Colo. - Sophomore Melissa Kellan scored four goals while senior Elizabeth Landry added a goal and two assists, but UC Davis trailed wire-to-wire in a 13-5 loss to Colorado during Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse action at Kittredge Field Friday afternoon.
The Aggies drop to 1-8 overall and open conference play at 0-1. The Buffaloes improve to 6-3 for the year and even their MPSF record to 1-1.
Kellan scored three of her four goals in the last five minutes of the contest after CU had taken a 12-2 lead. Landry netted her only goal on an eight-meter opportunity in the 11th minute, putting UC Davis on the board and halting the Buffs' 3-0 start to the contest. Senior Sara Quero had two of her team's four caused turnovers while senior defender Allie Lehner added five draw controls and three ground balls.
Sophomore Johnna Fusco led Colorado with four goals while Darby Kiernan and Marie Moore hit two goals apiece.
UC Davis dominated the draw, winning 14 of 20, including a game-high eight to Landry. However, the Buffs outshot their guests by a 31-13 margin, 14-5 before the halftime break. The Aggies also struggled to 21 turnovers.
Landry scored her free-position goal with 19:59 on the first-half clock then assisted Kellan for a goal in the 19th minute to bring the score to 5-2. However, Colorado answered with a Fusco eight-meter goal to set the halftime score at 5-2, then added seven unanswered out of the gates in the second half to climb to a 12-2 lead.
The Aggies took just two shots during the Buffs' 7-0 run in the second half, with goalie Paige Soenksen making the save each time. UC Davis also committed seven turnovers in that run, with four coming within a minute after winning a draw and two more coming shortly after a CU giveaway.
UC Davis continues its Centennial State visit in MPSF play at Denver on Sunday. Game time is noon from Peter Barton Stadium.
