TEMPE, Ariz. - Luke Vivolo had a 2-under 68 in the first round while Ryan Han's 67 sparked an outstanding 6-under score by the No. 57 UC Davis men's golf team in the second as the Aggies finished the first day of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in fourth place on Friday.
Vivolo finished the day 2 under and is tied for fifth for UC Davis which shot 12-over 292 in the morning before battling back to card a 6-under 274 in the afternoon. It was the second-best score of the second round and one of just four under par.
Han's 67 led the way in that round while Patrick Soli carded a 68 and Mike Brockington posted a 69. Each of them is 5 over and tied for 39th. Senior Matt Seramin had the most consistent day for the Aggies, shooting back-to-back rounds of 71 to move into a tie for 21st at 2 over.
Fifth-ranked host Arizona State set the tone over the first two rounds, dominating its own tournament for a 14-shot lead. The Sun Devils are 16 under while No. 14 Baylor is a distant second at 2 under. Iowa State, ranked 48th, is in third a shot back of the Bears. The Aggies are 6 over and lead fifth-place San Diego by two strokes and No. 40 Iowa by six.
Arizona State also has the two individual leaders in Jon Rahm and Max Rotluff. They are tied at 11 under after shooting 64 and 63, respectively, in the second round. The pair are eight shots clear of the rest of the field.
Vivolo played both sides of ASU's Karsten Course a shot under par in the first round before playing them both even in the second round. He had six birdies overall on Friday. Seramin had nine birdies, including six in the second round. He was 2 under over the course's back nine.
Han, who opened with a 78, had an eagle in the afternoon as part of his 67. He was 2 under on the back and had three birdies overall. Soli had four birdies over a five-hole span of the back nine which he also played 2 under in the second round. He had a 77 in the first round. Brockington, who shot a 76 in the morning, had three birdies and 13 pars during his impressive second-round 69.
The final round will begin with tee times at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. UC Davis will start at 8:15 and play with San Diego and Iowa.
