SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Luke Vivolo shot a 1-under 69, Matt Seramin carded a 70 and the UC Davis men's golf team jumped into the lead by two shots on Monday after two rounds of the Big West Championship at San Luis Obispo Country Club.
The Aggies, who are looking for their first Big West title since 2012, shot a 5-over 285 and are 13 overall heading into Tuesday's final round. They hold a two-shot advantage over UC Irvine and UC Riverside with host Cal Poly in fourth at 25 over.
Vivolo and Seramin made two of the biggest jumps on Monday. Vivolo, who was medalist at the El Macero Classic on Apr. 12, jumped 15 spots into a tie for third at 3 over while Seramin climbed 12 positions into sixth at 4 over. Mike Brockington, who opened with a spectacular 68 during Sunday's first round, shot 75 on Monday and is tied for third as well.
Patrick Soli is tied for 14th at 6 over after shooting 74 while freshman Ryan Han is tied for 17th after firing a 72. The Aggies' 5-over round was best of the tournament's nine teams on Monday.
"We hung in there today after a rough start," said Aggie coach Cy Williams. "Everyone kept battling in very tough conditions which was key for us. Luke and Matt stepped up with some solid rounds.
"Our fifth-man score has been the lowest in the field for each of the first two rounds which tells me that all five of our guys have the ability to step up for us tomorrow and close this out," he added. "Any of our five guys is playing well enough to medal for us."
Vivolo keyed his day with four birdies. He picked up his first two on the first and fifth holes to go to 2 under and then birdied two of his final three holes to get back in the red after three mid-round bogeys. Seramin was 2 over at his turn but then birdied four of the first six holes of his back nine to help him get 1 under with three holes left.
Brockington stayed in the top five with a solid back nine which he played just 1 over. Soli and Han each had eagles on the par-5 10th hole. Soli was even over his final nine holes while Han closed with a birdie to play his back nine 1 under.
UC Riverside's David Gazzolo and Pete Fernandez of UC Irvine are tied for the individual lead at 1 under.
The Aggies will tee of the final round starting at 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday and will play with UC Irvine and UC Riverside. The tournament winner will earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
