Brockington's hot start fuels Aggies at Big West

April 26, 2015

Results and live scoring

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Senior Mike Brockington's 2-under 68 Sunday at the Big West Men's Golf Championship at San Luis Obispo Country Club marked his fourth tournament this spring with an opening-round score in the 60s and helped himself and UC Davis end the day in second place.

Brockington's strong start fueled the Aggies to an 8-over 288 on the par-70, 6,677 yard course and put him just one shot off the lead held by David Gazzolo of UC Riverside. The Highlanders (+6) hold a two-shot advantage over UC Davis while host Cal Poly (+9) and UC Irvine (+9) are tied for third. CSUN (+18) and Long Beach State (+18) are tied for fifth in the nine-team tournament.

Junior Patrick Soli shot 72 and is tied for fifth for the Aggies, junior Luke Vivolo and senior Matt Seramin each had 74 and are tied for 18th, and freshman Ryan Han finished with a 76 and is tied for 27th.

"Mike did a great job for us today," said Aggie coach Cy Williams. "Everybody competed really well, it was just tough out there. It was very windy with fast greens but we definitely know the course a little better and will be ready to go tomorrow. Everybody looks good, sharp and ready."

Brockington has enjoyed first-round success throughout his seven tournaments this spring, shooting 69 at The Prestige at PGA WEST, 67 at The Goodwin at Stanford and 65 at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, along with his 68 on Sunday. Only Vivolo (4) has as many sub-70 rounds this spring for UC Davis.

Brockington started his day with five consecutive pars before birdies on the par-4 sixth and seventh holes helped him make his turn 2 under. He added another birdie on the par-5 10th hole and ended his day with seven pars and his only bogey.

Soli played consistently throughout Sunday's opening round, collecting 16 pars and just two bogeys -- one on each side -- to card his 72. Vivolo and Seramin had mirror rounds that saw them each shoot 3 over on the first nine holes but then each go just a shot over par on the last nine. Han opened with a birdie on the par-5 first hole before covering both the front and back nine at 3 over each.

UC Davis is looking for its first Big West Championship since 2012 while also grabbing the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals. The Aggies will continue their quest with Monday's second round while playing with Cal Poly and UC Irvine beginning at 10:40 a.m. The 54-hole tournament concludes on Tuesday.
